This session is intended to provide a broad overview of team coaching, what it is and is not, the possible pitfalls and what to consider when talking to clients about a potential team coaching intervention. It will also offer our own personal journeys in becoming and practising as a team coach and include a Q&A.

This session will offer an introduction to team coaching and its fundamentals. We will discuss the ‘golden rules’ of team coaching, what a team coaching intervention might consist of, and what some of the benefits could be. There will be an opportunity for a short demonstration of team coaching as part of the workshop.

Topics covered will include:

  1. What is team coaching? A common definition is lacking so how does it differ from other team interventions? What do the ICF and AC consider team coaching to be? And what is not team coaching?
  2. What are the fundamentals of team coaching? Drawing on your experience of one to one coaching we will look at the parallels and highlight the differences between the two, including contracting, the meaning of “systemic” in a team coaching context, “process not content”, and the importance of being clear on the purpose of the coaching.
  3. A demonstration of team coaching (which will require some participants to role play members of the team).
  4. Exploring some of the benefits of team coaching, and how teams and organisations might benefit from it. When is team coaching indicated as an intervention, and when not? What does a typical team coaching intervention look like?
  5. Q&A
  6. Our personal journey to becoming and practising as a team coach.
  7. How you can learn more about becoming a team coach.

Emily and Seb are experienced team coaches who have worked with leadership and management teams across a wide range of organisations including public sector, third sector, professional services and multinationals. They are both part of the Team Coaching Studio, a global provider of team coach development where Emily is on the teaching faculty and Seb is Head of Research.

Sebastian spent 17 years in finance and industry in the UK, Asia and Europe before setting up his own business in 2003. After spending some years working on customer feedback programmes he qualified as an executive coach, helping individuals particularly around career and business development. Seb gained a further qualification in team coaching in 2017 and now also works with leaders and teams to help them improve their effectiveness. He is a director at brownfox consultancy and Head of Research at Team Coaching Studio where he leads their research activities and has published several articles on team coaching. Seb is currently writing up his Doctoral thesis which is on how team members and team coaches find their sessions to be productive.

Prior to starting Turnstone Coaching in 2017, Emily’s career has mainly been in the charity and public sector where she worked at Director level before training to become an executive coach. Her passion for coaching was ignited when she worked with a coach herself and experienced the transformational impact on her own self-awareness and leadership confidence. Her work at Turnstone is increasingly centred on working with senior leadership teams from across sectors who can and want to work differently in order to have a positive impact on the system they operate in. She is passionate about working with organisations who make a difference to individuals or communities be that through the work they do or their belief in and commitment to corporate social responsibility. Emily is a member of faculty at Team Coaching Studio and delivers on both the Certificate and Diploma in Team Coaching. She holds both PCC and ACTC accreditation with the ICF.
